Eligibilty for free places

This training course, free to third sector organisations is part of the Department of Health's Strategic Partner Programme.  To be eligible for a free place your organisation must be voluntary sector organisation/registered charity. Please ensure your organisation is eligible before booking a free place, otherwise you will be invoiced for the cost. There are up to two free places available for each eligible organisation, please can applicants apply for one free place at a time? Many thanks.

Is your organisation health commission-ready?
This one day training course will provide an introduction to health commissioning for third sector organisations working with children and young people. If you want to bid for tenders, are unclear about the commissioning landscape and are looking for an introduction to what commissioners want and starting to put together your tender, this course is for you.


The training will help participants to:

  • Gain a greater awareness of the children and young peoples’ health and social care agenda.

  • Increase their knowledge of the context and concepts of the commissioning process.
  • Increase their understanding of what health commissioners are looking for.
  • Understand what is needed to be commission ready.
  • Gain an awareness of where to find support to work in partnership to be part of a commissioned programme.

Why attend?
This training provides the opportunity for participants to explore health commissioning requirements, as well as undertake practical exercises around commissioning.

The course will also offer the chance to meet colleagues, exchange experiences and share knowledge with others working in the children and young people's organisations in the region.


Who should attend?

The training is designed for strategic managers and development workers in third sector children and young people's organisations that deliver children, young people and family services.

Training is suitable for organisations of all sizes, and will benefit Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations, local authorities and other organisations involved in delivering services within the sector.

What does it cost?
There is a reserved number of 22 FREE places available for Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations on each course. Each VCS organisation is entitled to book up to two free places only, regardless of the number of areas they may operate within. Any additional free places booked by an organisation that already has a free place booked will be invoiced for full payment.

For fee paying organisations the cost of the training is £299.57


Each training day is open to 25 delegates, and places are booked on a first come, first served basis.


Cancellation policy
This training is offered free with a limited numbers of places. In the event of a cancellation, please let us know in writing as soon as possible so that the place can be offered to another organisation. Places cancelled at less than 3 days notice will be subject to a £50 cancellation charge.

Training content:

Legislation and Context
Participants will explore the legal, and policy context for health commissioning, including ; Healthy lives,brighter futures and Securing better health for children and young people through world class commissioning,The Children's Plan,The children's Plan One year On, and the Child Health Strategy.


Participation of Children and Young People

Participants will gain an appreciation of the importance of involving children, young people and their families in designing, developing and evaluating health related services.


How commission-ready is your organisation?

This theory-based session will identify the key skills, characteristics and standards that VCS organisations need to demonstrate in order to be commission ready.


How do you prepare a successful health tender?

The training day will conclude with the opportunity for delegates to consolidate their knowledge and discuss their learning with colleagues.

Please note that in order for delegates to benefit fully from this training, a small amount of pre-training reading is required. It will take a maximum of two hours and NCB will supply all documents two weeks prior to the course date.
